That's a pretty useful little device. It has a little metal jumper that can be set to 500, 800 or 1200Hz. I pulled one out of mine and it is set to 500Hz. I think I'll leave it there, but it might be fun to hear the difference when I'm feeling experimental. They sound pretty amazing now.

Re: A7 cabinets in NY, NY
I think I need to do something to protect the speakers on the A6s. I was thinking about grilles like this:
Dayton Audio HDSG-15 Heavy Duty 15" Speaker Grill 262-866
but they only seem to come in 15" and 18". The 3156 frame is 16". The gasket is pretty wide. Maybe the 15s?
They mount with this hardwear kit:
Penn-Elcom G0780KIT Large Grill Clamp Kit 260-352
It would be nice to get one that fits flush.

Re: A7 cabinets in NY, NY
Update: So I started fooling around with the attenuator knob on the 8256s. It is quite a useful device. Having had a frame of reference of trying to get as much high end as possible, I had the knob almost all the way up, like on my Heathkits. After listening to lots of different music for the past couple of days I was feeling disappointed in the bass response. Well...that little knob took care of that. I now have the MF, HF/MF button pushed in to attenuate just the mids and have it now almost all the way down. The highs are retained and mids tempered several dB so as to let the bass really shine. It became actually too much and I turned the mids back up a tweak. It now sounds very balanced with buckets of slam and no shortage of those wonderful Altec mids. My 15W amp is still more than enough to shake the windows. Now I have to work my way through the library again...
BTW, I spoke with Bill today and the 515Bs are soon to be off for recones.
Re: A7 cabinets in NY, NY
Rambling alert~!
So...I have one 515B out for recone. The other looks good.
The question is: do I want to use the 515Bs in the 828 cabs or the 416As from the Heathkits? If I use the 515s I can restore the Heathkits to their original configuration buy putting the 806As back. At that point I can use them or sell them to help fund a more compact 604 based package.
I would then use the 288s and MRII564s on the 828s until I build/buy some 805Bs. The MRII564s sound very good, BTW. Very un-beamy.
I could then put the 8256 cabs in the garage with the 802Gs (from the Heathkits) and a pair of cheap 511Bs and still use the N1285 XO set to 500Hz.
Current inventory:
LF - (2) 515Bs, (2) 416As, (4)3156s
HF - (2) 806As, (2) 802Gs, (2) 288-8Ls,
Horns - (2) 811s, (2) MR II 564s,
cabs - 2 each: Heathkit AS101s, Altec 8256s and 828s.
